Who was Don Barrett?
Don Barrett was a distinguished educator and veteran with a rich background in both military service and teaching. Originally from Basking Ridge, New Jersey, he dedicated a significant part of his life to the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served with honor for 26 years. Rising through the ranks, he ultimately retired as a Sergeant Major in August 1995. His time in the Marine Corps instilled in him a deep sense of discipline, leadership, and commitment to service.
After retiring from the military, Don transitioned to education, becoming a Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (MCJROTC) instructor at Rutherford County Schools in Rutherfordton, North Carolina. From August 1995 until his official retirement on June 30, 2012, he played a pivotal role in shaping young minds and instilling the values of leadership, respect, and responsibility in his students.

In fact, upon his arrival at Rutherford County, he took the initiative to establish a new MCJROTC program at the high school, ensuring that students had the opportunity to benefit from the structured environment and mentorship the program offers. Don’s educational journey also included studying at East Carolina University, where he further developed his skills and knowledge.
He also expanded his horizons by studying Human Relations at the University of South Vietnam, reflecting his commitment to understanding diverse perspectives and fostering positive relationships. Throughout his career, Don has been known not only for his leadership but also for his genuine care for his students and community. His legacy continues to resonate with those he taught and mentored, leaving an indelible mark on the lives he touched.
