On July 10, 2021, the Royal Navy mourned the tragic loss of Leading Engineering Technician Daniel Harrison aboard HMS Kent. The Type 23 frigate was en route to the Far East as part of the Carrier Strike Group deployment, which included the Royal Navy flagship, HMS Queen Elizabeth, when the news was announced to the ship’s company, casting a somber shadow over the mission.
Daniel Harrison joined the Royal Navy in 2016, bringing with him a strong work ethic and a passion for service. Before his naval career, he was employed at Washington Metalworks, where he honed his technical skills. During his time in the Royal Navy, he served on several vessels, including HMS Somerset, HMS Collingwood, and HMS Montrose. His deployments took him to various countries, including Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Denmark, where he not only contributed to naval operations but also built lasting friendships and experiences.
Beyond his technical expertise, Daniel was known for his adventurous spirit. He enjoyed rock climbing, mountaineering, skiing, and going to the gym, often seeking out challenges that tested his limits. His passion for DIY projects, gardening, and home renovation reflected his creativity and hands-on approach to life.
In May 2019, Daniel’s dedication to his community was recognized when he received the HMS Collingwood Award at the Mayor of Fareham’s awards ceremony. This accolade was a testament to his volunteer work at Tudor Lodge care home, where he made a significant impact on the lives of the residents through his kindness and commitment.
As the naval vessels in the Carrier Strike Group traveled through the Mediterranean and headed towards the Indo-Pacific region, the loss of Leading Engineering Technician Harrison was deeply felt among his shipmates and the wider Royal Navy community. His contributions to the service, coupled with his vibrant personality and commitment to helping others, have left an indelible mark.
Daniel Harrison will be remembered not only as a dedicated sailor but also as a friend and an inspiration to those who knew him. The Royal Navy honors his memory and extends its condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.
