An unlicensed motorcyclist has been taken into custody following a tragic head-on collision on the Sydney Harbour Bridge that resulted in the deaths of two drivers. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, sparking a series of chaotic events as emergency services rushed to the scene.
At approximately 1:40 PM, a vehicle traveling north reportedly veered into oncoming southbound traffic, causing a multi-car crash. In the aftermath, police confirmed that two male drivers, who have not yet been identified, lost their lives at the scene. Meanwhile, another man and a pregnant woman were transported to Royal North Shore Hospital, both in stable condition.
As emergency personnel worked to manage the situation, the motorcyclist allegedly rode his unregistered bike through the closed crime scene, directly toward responding officers. Witnesses reported seeing the rider speed over the bridge, ignoring the established barriers meant to protect those attending to the injured. Officers quickly intervened, with one officer sustaining minor injuries—a bruised leg and grazes on a hand—while attempting to stop the motorcyclist.
Footage from the scene shows multiple officers tackling the man before he was handcuffed and placed in a police vehicle. Following the incident, he was taken to Day Street police station, where he faced a total of 12 charges early Friday morning.
The Harbour Bridge experienced significant traffic disruptions, with all southbound lanes and three out of four northbound lanes closed for several hours. Authorities managed to reopen two lanes in each direction by around 4:20 PM, but motorists were advised to expect delays into the evening. As the investigation continues, police are appealing for any witnesses or those with information regarding the collision to come forward.
